Improve Your Sleep with a Better Bedroom

Blog

If you feel tired or cranky despite your normal amount of sleep, your suffering may be due to your mattress. The truth is, mattresses don't last a lifetime, and replacing them is an investment in your health and well-being. Take time to assess your mattress and decide if replacement is the first step to getting better rest.

Could it be time to replace your mattress?

  • The average lifespan of a quality mattress is around seven years. If your mattress is older, it is time to buy a new one.
  • Ask friends and family members about their mattresses and try a few out at furniture stores to determine how firm, soft, or supportive you want in your new bed.
  • Make sure to ask about the vendor's return policy when buying your new mattress so you have some recourse if you are unsatisfied with how you sleep. Many merchants offer a 30-day trial period for new purchases.

Some other tips to improve your bedroom and enhance your sleep include:

Soothing lighting. Make sure your bedroom lighting is conducive to a good night's sleep. Invest in dimmer features to create softer, more soothing light, as well as ample task lamps for reading and activities.

White noise. White noise can drown-out the sounds of the street, traffic, or the rest of the house when you retire to your bedroom. A fan or air conditioning unit will provide a steady sound, but you may also choose to invest in a white noise machine, sold at most home and garden retailers. These typically replicate relaxing sounds such as rain, waterfalls, birds, and music.

Visual peace. If you have a lot of visual clutter in your bedroom, it could interfere with your sleep. Clean out and get rid of any clutter taking up space in your bedroom. Keep it neat and tidy to relax you after a long day.

Dedicated space. Your bedroom should be a dedicated space, simply for resting and relaxing. Keep work and stimulating activities out of your bedroom to help evoke a calming atmosphere. This is not the place for your workstation or home office!

Sleep deprivation can impact all areas of your life, leaving you feeling tired, stiff, and moody. Use these tips to enhance your sleep experience and determine if your bedroom needs some work. Visit furniture stores to find the best mattresses and furnishings to create a peaceful, restorative sanctuary!
